A FAIRE DAY FOR MURDER

A Psionic Corps Mystery

Book 2

Author: Alan Scott

E-Book List Price: 6.99

Published: August 20, 2022

Word Count: 69,376

Genres: Murder Mystery/Suspense

The brutal murder of an old man in his isolated farmhouse and very few clues leaves local law enforcement with no alternative but to ask the Psionic Corps for help.  Ian Houston with his paranormal abilities is called in but his presence isn’t welcomed by all.  The sheriff is convinced the owners of the nearby renaissance faire are behind the murder, especially since the victim was about to evict the faire from his land just as their season was getting underway.

Ian is not convinced the case is so straightforward, especially since there are other people with just as motive for doing away with the old man; the neighbor whom he has had a long-going property dispute, the son who will inherit his lands although the farm isn’t very profitable; one of the many participants and patrons of the faire whom the old man harassed over the years.  To keep innocent people from being charged with murder, Ian must join the renaissance faire as a cast member to see if there is a murderer lurking among the ren folke.

Compounding his investigation is the beautiful actress Diana Morgan who instantly steals his heart.  But as a cast member, she is also under suspicion and Ian discovers she may have a dark past, too.

A second murder confounds the investigation and the mystery becomes even more confused.  Meanwhile the sheriff is moving closer to charging the renaissance faire owners with murder.

Can Ian use his powers to find the real culprit and prove his new-found friends innocent?

REVIEWS:

5 out of 5 stars - Great Read!
"This was a great read. I thoroughly enjoyed the literary journey." - Dame, Amazon Review

5 out of 5 stars - Great crossover Mystery/SciFi Novel
"This novel starts with the brutal murder of an old man, alone in his isolated farmhouse near Oklahoma City. The sheriff is convinced that the managers of the Renaissance Faire, who rent parts of his farm for their annual festival, are the killers, but the local Chief of Police isn't convinced. The Chief calls on the Psionic Corps, a national network of agents with psionic powers, to investigate. Enter Ian, whose special talent involves manipulating the weather--appropriate for tornado-prone Oklahoma. His investigation involves under-cover work at the Faire, a tornado (of course), and a storm of bewildering clues. The psionic powers add a nice SciFi edge to the novel, but Ian uses old-fashioned detective work to solve the mystery. In the tradition of other SciFi/mystery blends such as Asimov's robot mysteries, the psionic powers follow well-established rules, and the ending is satisfying with no "deus ex machina" trap doors. The novel feathres lots of local color, insider information about Renaissance Faires, and even some romance, but the mystery dominates, with enough in the way of misdirection and false leads to satisfy the most rigorous mystery fan. Highly recommended." - Max G., Amazon review

4 out of 5 stars - Loved It
"I absolutely loved Ian and the other characters. The setting being a renaissance faire is just perfect. I want to know more about the psionic officers. Keep em coming Alan Scott!" - Nicci, Amazon Review

Editor's Notes: June 2022

Welcome to Angelia Sparrow with her western steampunk novel, The Sweet Science of Bruising. This author pushes the envelope and tempts the reader to go on an adventure of passion and curiosities in an alternate history where airships and gaslights abound. Lillian, her inventor main character, tempts fate by attending a controversial boxing match dressed as a boy, and everything goes sideways from there. She is captured as a plaything for Turlough the boxer, but even he is not what he seems. This was one I just could not put down. I wanted to know what happened next, where these two were going to end up, and how they were going to get out of each predicament they fell into. If you enjoy a steamy story with MFF, an abduction, and a clever plot to escape, this one’s for you!

Next up is Max Griffin’s Timekeepers which releases June 25, 2022. This MM sweet romance is heavy on the sci fi and alternate history. As Haakon and Nathan struggle to find their way back to one another, the world as we know it gets turned and twisted into something quite different. The Timekeepers have to clean up anything that goes awry, and maintain order. But at a cost! See how many historical references you can spot in this full length novel that will take you on a trip through important events that shaped what is to come, and has the main characters struggling to find out when and where they are, dodging counter-plots to the Timekeeper mission all the way. Max's stories are always fun to read. He blends in realism and mystery to everything he does. From the first line, I was hooked! If you love a good, twisty time travel tale, check this one out!

Meet Author: Alan Scott

Alan Scott was born and raised in western Oklahoma where he attended college. Later, he moved to north Texas where he obtained his doctorate in analytical chemistry. He now lives with his husband and Boston Terrier in Florida.

He is an avid reader and, after reading his first Agatha Christie novel, mysteries have been one of his biggest enjoyments. He has always enjoyed reading comic books and loves the superhero genre as much.

More about Alan Scott:

When did you decide you wanted to be a writer and what inspired you to start writing?

I had read many books by authors who were, for example, a physics professor for thirty years and now writes full-time, or an accountant for forty years and now writes full-time.  And I thought I could write mysteries that were as good as ones they wrote.  While on an Alaskan cruise, I came up with an idea for a mystery set on a cruise ship.  I told my husband about it and he said "Just write the damn thing!"

That was about 2006 and my hobby just grew from there.

What inspired your Psionic Corps Mystery series?

I have always enjoyed the mystery genre, paranormal abilities like telekinesis, and super-heroes, so why not join the three?  It has been an inkling in my mind for years and years, but it wasn't until "Inside Passage to Murder" that things started coming together.

What do you find most enjoyable about writing?

Sometimes I get to research fascinating subjects like the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, the global diamond industry, and the attack on Pearl Harbor December 7, 1941.  I learn so much when researching those topics, and I think it does add another element of realism to my stories.

Which of your own books is your favorite and why?

This is like choosing one of your own children as your favorite.  I'm going to say "A Faire Day for Murder".  Ian Houston is the first Psionic Corps character I created, and he is the perfect guy.  Handsome, long blonde hair, muscular, an Okie, and can control the weather.  What's not to like?  LOL  I started writing Faire Day before Inside Passage, because it is set in a renaissance festival.  I performed at renaissance festivals for years, so it was one book I didn't have to do a lot of research for

What is the most unusual topic you have had to research for a book?

Probably the diamond industry.  I learned how diamonds are evaluated and the process of selecting diamonds. At the time De Beers was the global giant in the industry but their lead has been waning in recent years, and they are no longer the powerhouse they once were.

What would you like readers to take away from your Psionic Corps series?

I want them to say "I had fun reading that novel, and I want to read another one."  I like telling stories that are fun.  Nothing philosophical or deep.  This isn't classic literature, and I'm not about to win any Pulitzer or Nobel prizes.  I want people to enjoy reading my novels.

LION RISING
The Prophecy of the Valda-Cree
Book One

Author: Diana DeRicci
List Price: 6.99 e-book, 17.99 Trade Paperback
Published: February 12, 2022
Word Count: 107,233
Genres: Fantasy Romance/Shapeshifter/Gay/M/M

Jayce Morrow is like any other college student: part academic, part nerd, part dreamer. Adopted by the only family he’s ever known he has no idea of his true identity. Or what his unknown history means.
Saving the world wasn’t part of his college application, after all.
When a gorgeous mage appears out of thin air in his apartment, he’s positive he’s dreaming, convinced one of his friends has jumped the shark looking for players for their D&D dungeon by hiring LARPers.
Except there is no dungeon to strategize through. Mages and magic are real. And he’s about to learn his role in saving their world.

Note from the Author: This story is a slow burn MM romance with some really stubborn characters, a few comments about an elf’s amazing hair, and challenges that can mold the man regardless of plans.

Meet Author: Diana DeRicci

Diana DeRicci
is the sexy, flirty pen name of Diana Castilleja. A romance author at heart, DeRicci’s writing takes you into a saucier spectrum of sensuality and sexual adventure, where a happily-ever-after is still the key to any story. Diana lives in Central Texas with her husband, one son and a feisty little Chihuahua named Rascal. You can catch the latest news on all of Diana DeRicci’s writing and books on her website. Feel free to drop Diana an email. She’d love to hear from you.

More about Diana:

When did you decide you wanted to be a writer and what inspired you?

Truth be told, I never actually decided to start writing. I'd dabbled some in my early twenties working at a job that gave me essentially 8 hours of no contact, attempting to emulate a historical that inspired me. I was into pirate and highlander stories, along with time twist mainstream, at the time. I learned two things then: I can't write historical or horror - not my thing at all. It was atrocious. My best friend's mother dared to slog through that story. She deserved a medal. Fast forward about a dozen years and I was a new mom with a lot of time to read and to myself. Cue the "new journey" music. I dug out storylines that were older than dirt and played. I even managed to get a new start up publisher to add their name to a few. By then, I had a new reading love: Paranormal. Thus was born Diego Viteri. And I never looked back.

Tell readers about your most current release.

Mated To The Sheriff is my latest release, a part of the Men of Silo series. Stand-alone books in the series follow couples from Silo and surrounding areas in the unmarked Midwest, USA. Matt is first introduced in a prior story, Where Trouble Travels, as Peyton's ex who is escaping a high profile, abuse situation. Arriving in Silo is a balm of fresh air and new strength. Where he can learn to be himself again. Then he meets Dave, the town Sheriff, and discovers maybe love isn't done with him yet. A love that has gentle hands... And howls at the moon.

What do you love most about writing?

I love the adventure of it all. That I can be anywhere in my mind, all over the world, or even other worlds. That there can be magic, that the things that go bump in the night can be heroes. There is so much about stories and writing them that I love. There's escapism, wild adventures, true feelings and emotions. When we can't really do those things during normal times, they're even more needed now.

Which of your stories is your favorite and why?

My favorite would still be The Charlie Factor. It was released 10 years ago and I still call it comfort reading. There is just something about Gregory's slow fall for Charlie, from friends to lovers, that makes me melt. It's a low-angst storyline, which means the story is almost solely about the characters' reactions to each other, and I find those stories refreshing. There is a lot of input and demands on our everyday lives and having a story where two men form bonds and they deepen naturally without being threatened, shoved, or forced as a catalyst to the story helps me to relax. These are the types of stories that make me want to curl up under a blanket fort. So I thoroughly enjoyed writing this one.

What is the strangest thing you’ve had to research for a book?

Honestly so many of my stories are character-centric, the most commonly researched aspect for stories is the jobs. Can they be done by one person? Can they be done outside of an office? Remotely? Are there licenses or degrees needed? Some of the most basic details to live day to day are what I end up researching. Definitely not strange.... Except for that one bit of history on bloodletting.... that might be strange. Leeches. *shudders*

What message do you want your readers to take away from your stories?

Just that there is someone out there for you. Someone who will believe you are exactly what they need, that you are enough. Whether a person is straight or gay, cis or trans, bi or poly, that isn't the part of you that is most important. That love comes in many forms and not all loves are sexual in nature. Love is as varied as nature makes it. Hopefully, my stories make a person feel, react, and maybe if I'm lucky and did it all right, a fan.

Lots of Love,

Diana
